Drop Test
RadioShack products shall withstand each of the following shipping requirements without damage:
Shipment from the original manufacturer to RadioShack warehouse. Such shipment is assumed to be in master packages and perhaps in internationally recognized shipping containers.
Re-shipment in individual gift packages to the individual RadioShack store by way of any available common carrier including Parcel Post, Express agencies and freight groups.
Final distribution to the customer in private or commercial delivery vans or in private cars.
RadioShack requires the following minimum requirements for acceptance of the individual package.

Note: RadioShack reserves the right of visual inspection and rejection if, in its opinion, a package has suspect qualities in spite of drop test results.
Drop Test Procedure Detail
(National Safe Transit Association Pre-shipment Test Procedures, Project 1A)
With the packaged-product in its stable shipping position, face one end of the container and identify the surfaces as follows:
top as one;
right side as two;
bottom as three;
left side as four;
near end as five;
far end as six.
Identify edges by the numbers of those two surfaces forming that edge. For example, the edge formed by the top and the right side is identified as 1-2.
Identify corners by the numbers of those three surfaces which meet to form that corner. For example, the corner formed by the right side, bottom, and near end is identified as 2-3-5.
Drop or impact the packaged-product in the following sequence:
the 2-3-5 corner.
the shortest edge radiating from that corner.
the next longest edge radiating from that corner.
the longest edge radiating from that corner.
flat on one of the smallest faces.
flat on the opposite small face.
flat on one of the medium faces.
flat on the opposite medium face.
flat on one of the largest faces.
flat on the opposite large face.
Inspect both the package and the product. The packaged-product shall be considered to have satisfactorily passed the test if, upon examination, the product is free from damage and the container still affords reasonable protection to the contents.
Out Of Carton Drop Tests
Products that can be attached to a user's belt by belt clip or an optional case shall pass the following out of carton drop test. Additional product-specific out of carton drop tests may be specified in that product's specific requirements section.
Product shall be set up for normal use. Drop test height shall be 50 centimeters.
Drop test surface shall be concrete covered with 1/8 inch asphalt tile (or similar tile).
Product shall be dropped a total of six times, once per surface.
Product may sustain slight damage (such as scratches, minor cracks or stress marks). Batteries may become disconnected and need to be reinstalled. Product shall be fully operational.
Sport Products
1. Water Resistance:
Product must meet Japanese Industrial Standard C0920-1993 section 4.6, Splash-Proof
Acceptance Criteria:
Splash-Proof Type - No harmful effect caused by water splashed on unit from any direction. No ingress of water into the interior of the unit that will hinder the normal operation the unit.
2. Out-of-Box Drop Test:
Product must pass an out-of-box drop of six (6) random drops from the following height requirements.
Product will be dropped onto concrete covered with 1/8 inch of asphalt tile or similar material.
Arm Band Unit:
The unit is intended to be strapped to the upper arm of the user.
Test Conditions:
1. Six (6) random drops from a height of sixty (60) inches (152.4cm).
2. The headphones must be attached.
3. The unit must have the batteries installed.
4. A cassette unit must have a cassette installed
5. The unit must be in Play/On mode.
Acceptance Criteria:
The unit must operate and may sustain minor physical damage.
Handheld/Belt Clip Unit:
The unit is intended to be carried in the user's hand or clipped to the user's belt.
Test Conditions:
1. Six (6) random drops from a height of forty-eight (48) inches (121.9cm).
2. The headphones must be attached.
3. The unit must have the batteries installed.
4. A cassette unit must have a cassette installed
5. The unit must be in Play/On mode.
Acceptance Criteria:
The unit must operate and may sustain minor physical damage.
Headset Unit
The unit is intended to be worn on the user's head.
Test Conditions:
1. Six random drops from a height of forty-eight (48) inches (121.9cm).
2. The unit must have the batteries installed
3. The unit must be On.
Acceptance Criteria:
The unit must operate and may sustain minor physical damage.
Belt Clip:
A detachable/replaceable belt clip is preferred.
Performance:
The unit must be able to operate in the normal operating environment of the product's intended use.
i.e. a belt clip unit must be able to maintain the radio channel while being bumped and jarred.
Results:
Results to be reviewed for practicality and good judgment. Any results that do not meet the criteria, will be handled on an application and/or case-by-case basis.
